Though their reputation of incredible kindness completely precedes them, I knew Devin + Lucas lived up to every great review the moment I met them. Devin’s infectious energy and Luke’s quiet confidence combining to make them the perfect balance.
Blue bird skies and a perfect 75* forecast set the scene in the Black Hills for the mid-September day. Devin + Luke gathered their favorite people from around the globe to join them at the foot of the Black Hills; using the perfect wood cabins near the Custer State Park Game Lodge to get ready and jam to their favorite tunes. The ceremony was nestled near the creek that ran through the State Game Lodge property, and later transitioned the party to the perfectly rustic barn reception venue within walking distance for their guests.
Our portrait time for Devin + Luke was almost completely unfair in every way. Unfair, being that everything was as perfect as it could be. From the light, to the background, to the pure joy flowing through the air. Not to mention, Devin’s incredible Emma and Grace Gown was flowing on its own energy plane the entire day; we finally had the chance to let Devin do her Bride Goddess thing in that Black Hills field.
In every single way, September 14 was the perfect day and I am so incredibly thankful to have had a part in it! Devin + Luke put so much time and energy into making their vision come to life. They are two such genuine, kind, inspiring and incredibly happy people, that their joy for life cannot help but be caught from sheer proximity. If you need a pick me up, follow Devin on Instagram! Though she hasn’t adopted the influencer title, she certainly is by far one of the most inspiring and influential people in my feed.
Thank you so much for trusting me to capture your day, Dev + Luke! You two are magic in itself! – xx
We asked Devin and Lucas questions about their wedding day to get to know a little more about their process, and of course a little about their love. We absolutely adored their answers and know you will too! These two are the perfect example of why we love what we do! Future brides + grooms, these answers will help you keep your sanity while planning your big day for SURE.
What memory is most vivid from your wedding day?
Luke: “Standing at the front looking at all of our friends and family and then seeing my beautiful wife-to-be walking down the aisle.”
Devin: “Walking up to tap Luke’s shoulder during our “first look.” My heart was pounding so fast and I swear time stood still for a moment as we were tucked in the forest in the Black Hills. As soon as he turned around and I saw his face, I was immediately comforted in the grace and love that makes up that sweet man!”
What is the single best thing you did at your wedding? And what is one thing you would change?
“Single best thing I would say is stay true to what you want! I’m such a people-pleaser and it can be easy to start making decisions to appease other people. However, remember that it is about you and your (future) husband, and the day should emulate your love and life you’re building together. One thing I would change is hiring a wedding planner or even a “day-of” organizer. I love a good DIY project and was very blessed to have so many friends and family to help with everything, but it’s a lot to do on your own. “
What is your favorite thing about Luke’s personality?
“My favorite thing about Luke’s personality is his sense of humor. We laugh so much, and it’s amazing having someone who’s always goofy with me and accepts my made-up-songs, constant noises, and the obsession with our kitty.”
Luke, what is your favorite thing about Devin’s personality?
“My favorite thing about Devin’s personality is how much she cares about everyone in her life. She makes me a better person because of it.”
What was your first impression of him/her?
Luke: “It was when she walked right up to me and introduced herself, and I instantly knew that this is the girl I was going to finally tell my parents about.”
Devin: “I remember seeing him at a going-away party at my friend’s house and turning to a sorority sister saying, “Who is that?! How do I not know him?!” Because I thought he was so handsome! It was strange that I had never seen him before, given everyone in Wyoming knows each other… I was certainly intrigued by this cute stranger and had to go say hi!”
What is the funniest thing she did while wedding planning?
Luke: “The funniest thing she did during planning was when my dad kept trying to add a bunch of people to the guest list even though we were already maxed out. Devin was playing along and started joking with him that we can do whatever he wants, since it’s his wedding, including getting him a fancy dress. We all started laughing and it became a joke that Dad was going to be the prettiest bride.”
What is the weirdest thing he had an opinion on while planning?
Devin: “Luke was oddly opinionated about the song we picked for our first dance. I had suggested seemingly hundreds of songs and he was sternly against all of them. Then one day we were in the car and he goes, “what about this one?” and played “All Your’n” by Tyler Childers. Immediate YES. “
